About BMB

What is Black Mothers Blooming?

Black Mothers Blooming is a reparative gift for Black mothers or women-identifying caregivers of young children residing in Charlottesville or Albemarle County. Black Mothers Blooming is informed by the work of racial repair, which seeks to acknowledge and address the harms of enslavement and structural racism on our society, which have led to the ongoing disinvestment in Black communities, and specifically in Black mothers. While this gift centers repair, it is also a celebration of Black motherhood—in its many beautiful forms— which is often the first site of care, love, and resistance.

Black Mothers Blooming will provide a reparative gift of $1,000 per month for the duration of four years to 50 Black mothers or women-identifying caregivers of children aged 10 or under residing in Charlottesville or Albemarle County.

Black Mothers Blooming is a collaborative effort funded by the Adiuvans Foundation, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, and other aligned philanthropists in partnership with the Black Mothers Blooming Steering Committee made up of nine local Black mothers, the Equity Center of UVA, and the Piedmont Housing Alliance Financial Opportunity Center.
